Beth Maddox, Artist

My enjoyment of art began at an early age in Tennessee. Family members soon grew tired of sitting for me, so I began drawing the world around me. Early training was by private lessons, where I learned the importance of perspective, composition, shape, value, tone and balance.Through the years, I experimented with charcoal, watercolor, pastels, oils and acrylics, but have finally chosen acrylics as my favorite medium because it is so versatile. Through self education, it has been great fun experimenting with acrylics, and I feel a certain magic while painting with them.

Abstracts are my first love. Inspiration comes from shapes in the world around me. After choosing a subject, it is painted using a technique I developed which utilizes the laying down and the lifting of many layers of paint. After much attention to shape and form, a subtle painting emerges which abstractly enhances the shapes and forms on which I have focused. I plan to continue using this technique and will develop it even further.

Although abstracts are my first love, I still enjoy painting a true-to-life landscape or a still life. It brings me back to the basics, which is any true artists’ greatest love. It gives me great pleasure to see a part of nature come alive on my canvas. I would have never guessed a year ago that I would presently be so furiously painting and enjoying it so much.
